The most vulnerable countries are in the Middle East. Of the 33 countries most likely to face water stress and water supply cuts in 2040, 14 are located in the Middle East – a region of high temperatures and low rainfall, where few rivers have permanent flow. Nine of these countries could face severe water shortages: Bahrain, Kuwait, Palestine, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Oman and Lebanon.
Water stress could affect the world’s major economies. How can we reduce the threat of water stress? There is still much to be done to reduce water-related risks before it is too late. As almost always, we will have to rely on the full commitment and support of governments, local institutions, the private sector and the individual will of each one of us: limiting water use in certain activities, planting more efficient crops, supporting water purification and desalination infrastructures, reforestation, reducing food waste and promoting more sustainable diets.
The improvement in air quality resulting from a worldwide reduction in greenhouse gas emissions would benefit human health and prevent economic losses.
Burning fossil fuels releases carbon dioxide, which contributes to global warming.
The World Health Organization predicts that exposure to heat caused by rising temperatures will be the biggest impact of climate on health. At the same time, burning fossil fuels emits air pollutants such as sulphur and nitrogen oxides, which are associated with premature deaths and respiratory diseases, including asthma.
One of these pollutants, nitrogen dioxide, produces ozone, which is harmful to human health.
